"More and more the nation becomes as generic as white bread, bland and uniform from place to place. When we are all the same, only those people who like the store-bought white bread will be happy."

That's most of us, Tom. And isn't that what it's all about: having as many people be as happy as possible? We LIKE it simple and mass-made; is that so immoral?

The homogenization/dumbing down is inexorable, and I half want to say that's fine as long as refuge (libraries, rare music, good experiences of the natural world) is available for those who need such things (a minority!). But I realize that someone could counter that attitude by calling it retreatist/defeatist, and I might just have to agree.

It's a tricky thing: those of us who want to enjoy the really fine things in life (poems, acoustic music, and-made crafts, etc), for whom Walmart or NBC or McDonalds is not good enough, really can't impose on those who would rather curl up in front of the idiot box and quaff junk food. No one wants to be a strident aesthete, and people have a right to maim their minds and bodies with rubbish. On the other hand, not saying anything is just about the surest way of losing something you treasure.

I don't know what the answer is.

Tom Montag

Elck--I suppose those of us who insist on having real experiences rather than the pablum version of life are like opera lovers. What's with that peculiar taste they have? It seems as if the same malls are cloned at the edge of all these communities across the country, and the only way real life intrudes on them is when some of the stores go out of business and the local, indigenous ventures move in. I cannot imagine that a child growing up in a suburban house where they're all made out of ticky-tack and all looking just the same will ever come back to it looking for "home." How can you attach to a place when it could be any other place?

Evan

Until I moved away from Michigan I always thought all states were covered with unused farms. Going to states where people actually grow things was an eye opener.

Michigan is 70% wasteland.

Tom Montag

Evan--Certainly in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan there is a lot of land that should never have been farmed to start with. What were they thinking? Conditions must have been tough to make that wilderness look promising....

I think the term "wasteland" belies a bias (one that I sometimes share as a farmer's son, alas): we tend to think land has to be "used" or useful. Which is not the case at all. I'm not sure the earth *needs* us. We seem to fill the stand-up-on-two-legs-and-pound-our-chest-and-wreck-the-environment niche in the scheme of things.

Whatever are you doing in Queens? Is that about as far as one can get from Michigan?
