We don't have to pretend anymore. It is below freezing this morning, and there is a thin crust of snow on the ground. It is winter, finally, after a long, mild autumn. The grass crunches. The pond is glassy smooth; it's in a reflective mood, you might say. There is nearly half an inch of snow on the windshield. Good blue sky overhead. As I drive up Washington Street, the snow on the hood of the pick-up dances. Swirls and lifts. I stop at the intersection of Washington and Main and today the sun will not peek out from behind the house next to the old school building - the sun has moved just far enough south that now I cannot see it from this corner. Clouds bank and pile to the east, along Lake Michigan. Blue sky everywhere else. For the first day of winter weather, this is not bad, not bad at all. Snow across the plowed fields, across the corn stalks, the bean stubble. Brown stalks poke through the white crust in the ditches. OK, OK, I believe. It's winter!
Sounds heavenly. I can't wait!
