Your post reminded me of how when I was young and living in Eastern Europe I felt the exact opposite: history was bearing down on my 'autobiography' in just about every imaginable way. From the borrowed religion of my parents in order to survive the war and the Nazis, to my first ‘exile’ from Romania to Hungary, on account of our being Hungarian and my mother’s problems with the authorities, to my daily travels in a Budapest then still pockmarked and scared by the two wars and the 1956 uprising – well, I could go on, but the most vivid emotional memory is that of my wanting to head west, as far west as I could possibly go ... which ended up being the semi desolate wilderness of western Canada a couple of decades ago. And there, I can tell you, I discovered much the same quiet courage of people living ordinary lives in extraordinary ways.

But then, in a way, my small turn down memory lane here in your comments does prove your point, doesn’t it?

And, Stegner, for me, has never been just a “regional” writer.

Tom Montag

Maria--Oh, I agree that Stegner is not "regional." Regional is a term some use to dismiss a whole category of experience they don't want to bother with. How tidy the world becomes when you can disregard anything written west of the Hudson.

Perhaps one distinction between your experience of Europe and my report of our experience here is between "old" and "new," between that which is established and grand (European history) and that which is only now being shaped and understood (North America). In this area, I really don't know any historical society members under the age of 50; and the average age of members is closer to 75, I'd say.

Mac.

I find an essential inconsistency in Wallace Stegner's writings, in particular his feelings about that particular area around Eastend. At times he seemed to loathe the area because of the hardships it caused his family. And yet a few years ago I heard him being interviewed and he emphasized how much he loved the area, the sheer beauty of the place, the sunsets and the freedom of the wide open spaces. I knew personally some of the very early settlers in the town, a teacher, etc. I think Stegner was grossly unfair in some of his personal comments regarding people who impacted on his early life. Needless to say I am not an enthusiastic reader of Wallace Stegner"s writings. On the other hand that probably means that they have much value and represent superb literature!

Tom Montag

Mac--

Inconsistencies and contradictions don't bother me so much, as I have a few of them myself. You might think I, too, am unhappy about the area where I grew up because of the hardships I've described on the farm there. I think it is possible to paint a picture of hardship in the place and to love the place; at least that's true in my case.

You might also want to re-read some of what Stegner says about Eastend in the light of his feelings about his father, a fellow who moved from place to place looking for the Big Rock Candy Mountain and never finding it.

Further, on the unfairness to certain people, I too was perhaps unfair to certain people in my memoir, CURLEW: HOME, but I was reporting as truthfully as possible what I was seeing as a child. At the same time, my brothers and sisters will tell you that what I saw is not the same as what they saw in many cases.

My ultimate feeling is that if one reads WOLF WILLOW as anything other than a love letter to Eastend, he is misreading it to large extent. It reads like a love letter to me.

But you have to watch out for my opinion, because I really like WOLF WILLOW as a literary artifact. And during me visit I had a sense that at least some of the residents of the community have forgiven Stegner for anything untoward he may have said.
