Cool...I use a digital recorder too!

suzanne

I have a digital recorder.
Purchased for the car; same as you, Tom
Can't use it
while my thoughts flow
when I'm driving
(my muses love car rides)
what comes out of my mouth spoken
is entirely different
than what I fingerspeak

so I jot down
one or two word
"sign posts"
so I can find my way back to the thought
when I'm at my computer

and the recorder sits on a shelf
unused

GLAD to hear what a GREAT TIME
you had

Tom Montag

Hi, Michael. Thanks for stopping by. I expect that with a little more use, I'll feel even more comfortable with a digital audio recorder in my hand. And likely I'll talk about my experience here. Hope your book project is going well.

Tom Montag

Hellooo, Suzanne. My preliminary feeling is that the digital audio recorder is going to work great for me. Geez, I wish I'd known you had one sitting unused! I really think I will get past the difference between the voice that goes onto the recorder and that voice I hear when I'm writing. By the time I get these transcribed and typed up, I think they're starting to sound like me. But you be the judge when I post passages from my roadtrip meditation. Yeah, the car is a great place for unleashing the muse.

You know, if I did too many presentations and readings like those in Moorhead, I might forget how to walk with my feet on the ground. As untethered as I am generally, it's not good to overdo it, I think. :)

suzanne

Tom: Geez, I wish I'd known you had one sitting unused!

Me: ask next time you have a hankering
for something!

Tom: I really think I will get past the difference between the voice that goes onto the recorder and that voice I hear when I'm writing.

Me: This is not my problem. I'm fine with my voice. The problem is a write
in my Voice

I think in something more than words
when I listen to my muses
And what comes out of my mouth
when I try to tape
is nothing like what would come
out of my fingerspeaking

when I tried to use it
I'd record and when I'd listen back
there was nothing there that was worth
shaping into anything else

I do better jotting a word or two down
which becomes a signboard
in the fen (beyond my ken)
to tell me how to get back
to the complete evennt
that was going on in my head

the unruly suzannish equivalent of
Giordano Bruno's memory cathedral:

a swamp land with tussetted hummocky
islands
fern laden reed covered
and scraggely treed

and I am poleing my way
in a flatboat
beyond my ken

and what goes on
on those islands
is what the signs posts
are to remind my of

and that's what my muses
do to me
on a car ride

I can't wait to read
how you fared with it

James Shafstall

The car ride is amazing, isn't it? Thirty hours on a Greyhound bus from Florida, twenty-five hour drives between here and Texas, sitting for endless hours in my Mustang in the parking lots of Texas--these have been my spiritual journeys, my rites of passage into manhood. I've had some of my greatest epiphanies, most trying moments, and best writing ideas in cars.

I'm afraid, though, that if I recorded myself and then listened to it, I would get too inside. There's a big hole in my chest, and if I'm not careful, I'll fall right in. But then maybe if I talked about what I saw, I would learn to look outside more. But that's not my tendency when I ramble.

Tom Montag

Hi, James - To establish a new tendency, you just need to practice it a lot. To walk the edge of that hole in your chest, you've got to start practicing walking there.

I am astonished at how fruitful these car rides can be. I think I LOVE my little digital autio recorder.
