there are certain amazing folk
one would be quite happy to hear,
live forever

your Delbert is one
and I guess
barring eternal life
preservation in word
is not too shabby

he reminds me
of the nun study
and the importance
of cultivating a life time's worth
of Grit and Wonder

Hi, Suzanne. Yes, Ol' Delbert was a wonder. He didn't let life get him down. Now - where does that pluck come from. Even the Nun study doesn't seem to indicate where the characteristics come from that "protect" against Alzheimer's, except for the educational component. Are "idea density" and "grammatical complexity" nature or nurture. And what of someone like myself who tries to avoid grammatical complexity for philosophical reasons? Delbert could have just laid in bed and died, but he didn't; he got up and hoed the garden, wrote his music, played harmonica. As I say, where does that pluck come from. And even if we had it all sliced and diced and explained to ourselves, Delbert would STILL be remarkable.

And he's only ONE AMONG MANY I've met along the Vagabond way, which suggests thre are some pretty remarkable folks residing here in pretty ordinary circumstances.

suzanne

several things:

I'm convinced you scratch
below the surface
of almost any-
(who knows maybe even every-)
one and you can find
something remarkable
about her/him

it only takes the Doing___
(which you do Do
and makes you so remarkable
your own self)

as to idea and grammatical density
that's a weakness of science
it narrows the focus

I think what keeps Alzheimer's
and other terrible afflictions
at bay
is Wonder
which provokes the Inquisitive within us

all of us start out with it
and we are not deterred by "failure"
or mistake
(think of a toddler learning to walk
failure means nothing to her)
andn we are willing to try
all sorts of things

the more and more varied
the things you try to do
and the things you think about
the more neuronal connections
you weave
and that richly woven tapestry
stays firm then
when a strand here or there
breaks or disconnects

the trick lies in
retaining wonder
and curiosity

Tom Montag

Suzanne--It's a challenge to retain wonder and curiosity. Life has a way of beating it out of some people; other people keep getting back up for more. I don't understand what the difference is between them, why some give up, and others keep hold of their electric wonder. I suppose if we tried to figure out the difference, we'd narrow the focus, too, and not be able to get what we were looking for. Yet it is the willingness to be surprised by the everyday little miracles that is the life-blood of our souls, whatever it might do for our neural connections.

Anita Dalkin

Delbert Cothern was my cousin. All my life I heard my father tell stories of him. My father and Delbert use to play music together and also send each other tapes of music they had written. It is amazing to find articles written online about him. We are so sad that he has passed on but it helps to know that people are inspired by his courage.

Tom Montag

Hi, Anita. I am pleased that you found the write-up here about Delbert. He was a terrific fellow, and I felt privileged to meet him. Though he wouldn't know what we were making a fuss about - he just did what he did, with a lot of humility. If you look around here and at the previous Middlewesterner site, you may find some longer pieces about Delbert.... Thanks for stopping.
