A quick thunderstorm rolled through about 4:30 a.m. The noise and flash was here and gone in less than half an hour. The slow rain lingered. The sky is dripping still. We had a very hot Saturday and it was warm yesterday. The night cooled us, this brief rain storm cooled us, we shall survive. Temperatures in the 90s are supposed to continue all week. It's a grey sky, bright where the sun should be. The street is wet. One should not complain. Pea viners are in the field just north of the village, sliding around in the greasy gumbo, tearing up the field, picking peas. The field of alfalfa has been cut. The field of winter rye next to it has been taken - I think it looks like the straw is ready to be baled. The smell of dead skunk mixes with the smell of drying hay. A pair of matching planes is flying wing tip to wing tip as I drive east on East Fond du Lac Street in Ripon. They wheel a turn to their left and set the mark for Oshkosh and the EAA [Experimental Aircraft Association] convention. The beauty of these planes in tandem: a good way to start the day.
