Tom Montag!
Yes, I am the winner of the First Annual Writer's Retreat at The Farm in Marquette County.
Okay, so I was the only writer qualified to apply for this retreat, and I was the judge who made the final selection. Of course I won.
Perhaps I should explain further. It's our "farm," Mary's and her brother's. It is 120 acres of sand and pine trees. There's an old farmhouse on the place. There's a lot of peace and quiet. And I need some time to focus on my writing. And these days I've been feeling as if I've been ignored or rejected about as far and wide as it's possible to be ignored or rejected. Yeah, I have been feeling sorry for myself. And I have needed to win something - even if it is a jury-rigged retreat at our own summer place.
I'll drive over later today, for a week, or maybe more than a week, to work on Peter's Story and my series Plain Poems: A Fairwater Daybook, both of which have been neglected of late. I'd like to complete the first draft of Peter's Story, at least. I have only three chapters roughed out so far. And I'd also like to spend some part of each day being a poet again.
As a result, you won't be seeing much of me here in the coming week or two. I do have Ivan Burgess's Echo Echo excerpts loaded for posting on the coming Tuesday; entries from the "Morning Drive Journal" will be posted as usual (after a break of several days due to a business trip I had to take during the course of the 1999 journal); "Saturday's Poem" will come up on Saturday; and you can look forward to a long appreciation next Sunday, of Kathleen Dean Moore's lovely book, The Pine Island Paradox. Other than that, I'll be making myself scare here for a while.
Now it don't mean I don't love you, folks. It's just that if I'm a "writer," maybe I should get some "writing" done. And that's what I intend to do.
See you in a week or two.
Enjoy the retreat and happy writing, Tom! May the muse be with you!

May you be productive on the farm -- with lots of new words sprouting in endless rows of text that ripples in the breeze of inspiration.
Okay, more to the point: have a great and productive retreat!
