We had a little more snow
by evening yesterday. I took the snowblower out after supper last night and cleared the driveway and the plowbank at the end of it. If today were Christmas it would be a Christmas lovely and white.
The morning is calm, grey.
And cold. It is a cold winter morning. There are patches of blue sky and the occasional coin of a sun showing through. The streets are snow-covered. The flag at the Fairwater cemetery blows straight to the east. Highway E is slippery. Just north of the village I see the tracks of a vehicle which has already gone off into a field. Oncoming drivers are as cautious as I am. There is enough snow blowing that the ditches are already full in places.
There are a million sparrows along the roadway north of Fairwater. A million times the pick-up wants to slide sideways and a million times I pull it back.
North of Five Corners there is a car in the ditch. It is in the ditch good, its hood is covered with snow, its headlights glow beneath the snow. There is no one in the car.
At the intersection of Highway E and Union Street just south of Ripon a two car accident has spilled out into the middle of the roadway. One of those cars will never be driven again. A policeman has charge of the situation. I think it is the woman who had been driving the badly damaged car who is talking to the officer now. She looks dazed. I slip-slide the scene.
Why, just about the time you think you're in control, it's BAMM!, isn't it?
