I was speaking
to our daughter Jessica about our Thousand Mile Challenge. She's jogging a thousand miles this calendar year, and I'm walking a thousand.
"Dad," she said, "you're starting awfully fast. You have laid off since the marathon in September and you have to ease back into it. That's why they call it training. If you start back at it too fast, you might hurt yourself."
"Jess," I said, "I can't even walk sixteen and a half minute miles these days. I don't think I'm gonna hurt myself."
She made a sound over the miles of phone line as if she were biting her lip, holding her tongue.
At least your ears are as keen as ever!
I don't think your daughter has much to worry about, though. Yesterday's morning news suggests to me that you observe too much in a mile or two to take it too fast. (Will we be treated to a Morning Walk Journal (I hope)?)

Hi, Peter. Occasional snatches in the course of The Morning News is what I have in mind. I do carry my little digital recorder with me, but thus far haven't had a thought big enough to warrant taking the recorder out of my pocket. So I have been practicing my remembering til I get back to the house and can write it down....
