I love what you've written about books as art objects, the beauty of paper and the whole sensuous experience. I'd have loved to have seen that collection! Sounds like a perfect evening for you, Tom.

Tom Montag

Hi, Marja-Leena. Thanks for the good words. It was a terrific evening. I'm glad I didn't have to choose which I liked best - the books, the company, or the chicken with peanut sauce. Because the peanut sauce was REALLY good!

Rebecca Loudon

This is so lovely and true. The ecstatic page.

Tom Montag

Hi, Rebecca. Thanks for the good word. The ecstatic page, indeed. Would that all the pages were as lovely as those we looked at on Saturday night.

Sharon

Books, and how we come to them, or they to us. I didn't grow up in a home with books. One day, in a store, I was probably 10, I found a book in a bin, it was the story of Pinochhio, a book meant for a younger child than I was but it was beautiful to me, shiny pages, colorfully illustrated. Then, when I was about 11 a wonderful teacher, who saw clearly a little girl lost, on library day took me to a shelf and told me she thought I would enjoy these books. They were the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. I devoured them. I don't have books as exotic and prescious as those you speak of here but I have many memories surrounding books. The library, all dark wood and quiet. The smell in the library was wonderful, it smelled of books, the chairs at round tables and every sound echoed. This does indeed sound like a lovely evening. So, two scoops or one?

Tom Montag

Sharon--sometimes our best teachers just point us in the right direction; they say "Here," and get out of the way, and real learning takes place.

One scoop or two? Would I have mentioned it if I were not guilty? It was two scoops. Ice cream, like the green pepper, is proof of God's existence.

Charlie

The beauty of books runs so deep: the written words positioned upon the page, the person who assembled them there from a personal imagination, the reader who brings his or her own to it, the places those words take the reader.

It's no wonder that libraries and bookstores are so hushed, almost like a European cathedral. The visitor has a sense of other worlds there...

Let's hope such "magic" always has a place in this world. Thanks for taking us there...in more ways than one.

Tom Montag

Hi, Charlie. Thanks for the good words. A world without a place for the magic that is a good book will be a sad and poorer world indeed.

But then I'm old-fashioned - what do I know? I think "Live music is better" in an iPod world....
